Botanical Show at ASmith Gallery

My Daffodils on Ice was one of the chosen from 1,002 submitted images for the on-line exhibit.

I created the photograph, part of the Backyard series, by floating the flowers into a cooking dish filled with water, then freezing the whole thing. My wife complains how our freezer space is filled with frozen flowers.

Story

ASmith Gallery chose two of my images out of some 650 to be included in their Perspective on-line gallery show. Juror Kevin Tully chose Homecoming for the Juror’s Award. The image will also be included in the Gallery’s printed Book of 27 images. Homecoming is from a continuing series reflecting on my experiences as an immigrant. The Immigrants Journey.

Juror Kevin Tully’s comment about the image:

First, I was immediately attracted to your images because they are so well done. They are complete. Your attention to detail is obvious in that it is not immediately obvious. It is so spot on that we aren't aware of it because you have made a seamless scene and montage. So much composited work is clumsy, immediately causing the viewer to examine process. Your images become complete vignettes. The viewer immediately starts spinning story in their mind.

They are compelling as scenes from a larger narrative. They have the feel of illustrations from a graphic novel, but infinitely more sophisticated of course. I would like to see more from this series. Thanks again.

Jānis will show 10 of his recent photographic-centered works on translucent vellum. Inspired by the Byzantine Icon painters, Jānis has handstakenly applied gold leaf and other metals to some of the pieces. Other pieces are hand colored. Subjects range from star trails over a lonely abandoned school house, 5000-year-old petroglyphs and vintage cars in the vineyard scenes.

Hours: Wed-Sat 12-5 pm Call for mask requirements

OSA Oregon in Extraordinary Times Gallery Show

Oh, how success is a nice pat on the back. Looks like entering Jānis’s first juried fine art competition—Oregon Society of Artists’ Fall Photography show—was pretty successful. The theme: Oregon in Extraordinary Times. Jānis has been shy about entering competitions. “What if my work isn’t good enough?” He entered two images, this one received first place. The other sold.
