OREGON The Taste of WINE

book

*NEW* Oregon: The Taste of Wine, won top honors at the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Ben Franklin Book Awards in New York City on May 28, 2009. The gold medal was in the Regional Category, competing against all books nationwide with a regional slant.

Contrary to the title, this book is not really about wine. Rather it’s about an extraordinary group of individuals who, for some reason, happened to come together in this place called Oregon to create something world-class. It’s about their individual and collective energy, their values, their passion, their vision, and their humanness.

From the beginning, I wanted their personal stories to be the narrative, told in their own words. So I set out with recorder and camera. Originally I thought talking with twenty key people would do the trick. Wrong. In the end, I recorded nearly two hundred hours of interviews with more than eighty owners, winemakers, and vineyard managers from all over the state, and spoke with many more wine-industry workers—in several languages. Then, true to a National Geographic background, I took more than three thousand photographs, which I agonizingly edited down to one thousand “finals.”

During the very first interview, when I heard Oregon wine pioneer Dick Ponzi say, “I’ve never really told this to anyone before,” I knew we were on the right track.

"Janis has really captured the essence of our wine community. Of course, the photography is completely first rate but what is perhaps more compelling is how he utilizes Winegrower testimonials to weave a narrative through the book that really provide an accurate picture of who we are as people."

Adam Campbell, owner/winemaker Elk Cove Vineyards

Here's what Brian Bushlach, host of Vine Time radio show says: "It is a spectacular work of art, both visually and in the literary sense! You captured the soul of the Oregon wine industry, like I’ve never seen it, nor experienced it. I’ve never been so in love with book about wine."

Brian Bushlach, host of  Vine Time radio show

"This is a beautiful coffee table book. Includes some of the best Oregon photography I’ve seen.... The quotes provide a lot of insights into what Oregon wine is all about."
