Observations

Tribal tribulations.??Interviewing a Suri woman about myths and dreams. She had 15 children and we aproximated her age to be 55.Suri woman with child. It cost me 10 birr to take a bunch of photos of this woman and child.?After Ryan bought a decorated gourd from this lady, she started proposing to him. I asked for 50 cattle for Ryan. She replied that it is suppose to be the other way around. We pay her family. This is where we camped with the Suri in Tilgit village.?

• One Kalashnikov costs a Suri man about 2000 Ethiopian birr (about $250 USD.
• Ulrike, the indigenous language teacher, noted that one of the reasons Suri men carry the AK 47 was prestige. “It’s like Americans with their BMWs and Mercedes.”
• Jebrial, the Turgit village store owner and helper to John the missionary, said that many Suri went to Deema to dig for gold when they ran out of home-grown food. “There’s an area where they can dig anywhere.”
He laughs. “Free market.”
• One good reason for staying in an African hotel instead of a tent is that you don’t have to unzip the tent door to take a leak during the night. I can’t think of another.
