Fall of Man: Suri version
?In the beginning man had a direct connection to God. There was a rope from the earth directly to God. The first man and woman could climb to God when they wanted. (While many Kibish and Turgit villagers seemed to know this story, some said it was a road instead of rope.)
God only asked that when man and woman came, they bring nothing with them.
One day the woman decided to carry her grinding stone with her up the rope. As she started to climb with the stone under her arm, the rope broke.
On the 45-minute drive back from the storyteller’s village, Ermius, our driver, mentioned the story of Adam and Eve in the Old Testament.
“It’s the same story,” I replied. “Man breaks God’s rule and the direct connection disappears.”
Our Land Cruiser heaved through a deep road rut with one rear wheel spinning on some loose rocks. “Its even the woman in both stories.”
I wondered what other similar symbols there might be. Food: Fruit in one and grinding stone in the other? What else?
